Costs vary significantly by state
National average is ~3 years; 20% need 5+ years
Historical average ~3%; adjust as needed
Assumptions and Limitations
- Base cost data
- State median costs from the Genworth/CareScout Cost of Care Survey, 2023. Medians represent the midpoint of surveyed providers in each state.
- Home health aide
- Annual figure based on 44 hours/week, 52 weeks. Part-time or intermittent care would cost proportionally less.
- Inflation assumption
- Default is 3%/year, consistent with the historical average from the Genworth survey (2004–2023). You can adjust this. Actual future inflation may be higher or lower.
- Total cost method
- Uses the average of the first and last year's inflated cost multiplied by the duration. This is a simplification; actual costs typically increase each year.
- What is not included
- Unpaid family caregiver time, home modifications, medical equipment, transportation, or care coordination costs. These can add meaningfully to total out-of-pocket costs.
- Not a guarantee
- These projections are illustrative only. Actual costs depend on your specific care needs, provider, location within a state, and future market conditions.
